SomeThoughts

Sat 30 Jan
I love researching, making sketches and notes, keeping notebooks, reading, watching films and documentaries, collecting, visiting flea markets, museums, art galleries and antique book shops, flicking through magazines, keeping files with cut out images - it all influences what i make.I have little boxes of vintage buttons, lace, ribbons, wax flowers from the 40s, pearls from broken necklaces, albums of antique photographs and negatives.I am interested in how things work, taking them apart, using things in unexpected ways - spay painting through lace or putting parts of books into old lockets. Pouring wax over still life's and objects to preserve them as small slices of time. I look at Victorian mourning jewellery - i like that - the rituals, etiquette's and memories. The Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford is a good example - boats hang from the ceiling- while cabinets are full of fossils, bones, shrunken heads, historical costume and artifacts from the black arts.I would like eventually to have created my own Wunderkammer from the real and imagined - the found and the created.Where lines and distinctions blur the audience is not sure whether they are viewing works of fiction or not. Making props discarded, unneeded - huge scale - tiny - multiples. So many idea's fly around my head and my to do list runs ever longer.I would like to spend more of days purely doing this - thinking, looking, taking photo's, writing and making but ultimately boring day to day tasks take over. Stocking the shop, the website, answering emails, budgets, tax returns, the day job and on and on.Today i was at the shop - between cleaning and serving customers i started knitting a necklace from vintage silkscarves and thinking about ways to photograph new stock - not very exciting!Tomorrow i will be at the day job so even less exciting and when i get home i will be desperately trying to be productive rather than just tired.

Lots of Work

I normally just do a quick blog after work, but here is my effort to do a bit of a longer one x
Above is a work in progress, a Wizard of Oz brooch.
Below is an image of a new range we have just completed in the shop, handmade union jack cushions, door stops , tea cosies etc.... Arranged on a dresser - iam hoping that by the end of Febuary we will have worked our way round the whole shop with new ranges and new merchandised.
Don't forget you can visit us anytime Tues-Sun 10-5pm (we just shut on Mondays). For directions go to sewkitsch.co.uk

Below is another work in progress, a copy of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe cut into the inside is a vintage locket - with pieces of the text trapped inside.

Below - Some inspiration in the form of some more found black and white photo's and some little pieces iam working on. Tiny stitches and pendants, some more vintage lockets ( i was lucky enough to come across a little stack of them recently), inside them are some wax flowers which are from an original 1940s wedding bouquet.

Below - a 60s box my friend gave me - it sits beside my sewing machine hiding buttons and threads.

Below - part of a little folk style range we are working on. I love these Russian Doll doorstops they remind me a bit of ghosts - i think it's in Spirited Away.
And i love the vintage Russian Doll tea cosy.

Below - again another work in progress. B is for - Birds, Bunny Girl and Buttons.

I am quite happy with work at the moment - maybe it's just nicely settling into a New Year - but even though i have lots of little piles of work to complete, it's not too crazy.
I do have an ever growing 'To Do' List however. I am working on setting up my new website, and new pieces to go on that. I am also getting geared up to use my christmas presents a Jigsaw ( so expect some wood pieces) and a book binder (i'm already working on some Notebooks.)

BusyMaking

We have been so busy lately, now christmas is over and the shop is finally back open after the snow.
Last night was spent making a giant owl for the window display and sewing price tags for all the new stock.
We have two new ranges - one is a range of shabby style union jack pieces- whilst the new range we are currently getting out is a Folky range.
Lots of owls, russian dolls, birds, deers and fairy tale inspired pieces.
Photo's to follow.

WunderLove

My new year's resolution is to be more productive in making, rather than having lots of idea's left undone. I am researching into Wunderkammer's at the moment which i love, above are some brilliant pieces of Taxidermy art.
1. Taxidermy art by Les Deux Garcons
2. Gordon Wilding's Sculptures
3. Taxidermy art of Sarina Brewer
4. Angela Singer
I am hoping to make a whole range of odd and bizarre 'collection' or Wunderkammer pieces.
